Family Photoshoot at Taylors Mill
July 16, 2025Every so often, I get the honor of photographing a family that reminds me why I do what I do. Recently, I had the privilege of doing a family portrait session for the Long family - Alyssa and Zachery, and their sons Hayze and Hutton. Little Hutton, who celebrated his 1st birthday recently, has Skeletal Dysplasia, an incredibly rare condition that affects bone and cartilage growth. His condition was diagnosed before birth, and at the time was considered fatal as most children do not survive their first year.
There’s a quiet power about Alyssa and Zachery - something I sensed from the moment we met. They carry themselves with a mix of warmth, resilience, and grace that’s hard to miss. They were completely in the moment the entire time we were together, and obviously grateful to just be there, capturing memories. The session wasn’t just about portraits - it was about celebrating love, connection and strength. When it comes down to it, that’s all that really matters to me in the work I do.
Hutton, despite all his medical challenges, was pure light. He was joyful and curious. His expressive eyes and sweet spirit let us all know that he was having fun too. His older brother Hayze was full of energy and tenderness. He clearly adores Hutton, and watching him switch between high-speed boy energy and loving, affectionate older brother was humbling.
There’s a grace and depth to families who’ve been through hard things that stays with you, and puts the rest of life into perspective. The Longs are spending their lives juggling appointments, navigating the challenges and unknowns that come with raising a child with complex medical needs, and being strong advocates every step of the way - all while soaking up the joy and chaos that comes with raising two young boys.
To this amazing family: thank you for letting me step into your world, even for just a moment. Your love is obvious and powerful, and your story deserves to be told. I hope these photos are a lasting reminder of the strength and joy you share every single day, and I wish you all the happiness in your move.
